RE: rear end specs

use a 1/2 inch "air" impact gun and tighten. No real torque specs there. Besides you cant really get a torque wrench to tighten there without turning the whole unit. NO NO NO NO

RE: K&N Air Filter Removed

The only benefit to the K&N drop in filter is $$$. Flow improvements are negligible and dirt retention is about the same maybe a bit better. But with the Motorcraft 6.0L donalson filter at $40.00+ a piece the K&N pays for itself pretty quick. Proper cleaning cycles and resisting the temptation to over oil will make it a great money saver. MAF meter fouling is caused by EXTREME over oiling, I've never seen a code from using a properly oiled drop in K&N. I have seen codes from the kits because they aren't properly engineered. The enclosed kits such as the S&B and Volate will lower EGT's just like EGT's are lower in the fall and winter months. More airflow of air from outside the engine compartment works. You can prove it to your self if you can read the intake temps. Just compare ambient temp with the intake temp. How often are you replacing that filter. It holds 3 lbs of dirt. Most fleet companies go 80,000 miles on it. K&N flows no better than the stock 6.0l filter and doesn't do nearly the filtration job. Adam

Your turbo and your warranty thank you, I'm sure. See it with my own eyes at least monthly. Adam

RE: Ford E-40D transmissions fluid change ?

It appears that Ford has confused the Mercon/MerconV issue thoroughly, and managed to absolutely contradict its owner's manual for many E4OD users. The last information I have is Ford's TSB 06-14-4 entitled "Mercon ATF is being replaced by Mercon V ATF as a service fluid," dated June 29, 2006. According to this bulletin, all automatic transmissions requiring Mercon can now be serviced by MerconV or dual usage fluids labeled Mercon/MerconV, and that after July 1, 2007, Mercon fluid will no longer be manufactured. So, MerconV is now OK for E40D transmissions, I think. At one time, it was said that MerconV contained (or did not contain) some elements that prevented its usage where Mercon was indicated. Now, it has been said that the new and improved reformulated MerconV is what should be used. If you are doubtful, a call to your local Ford dealer should clear up their switcharoos, or not. Yup, exactly right. Been using it in my E4OD for 5 years, even before the TSB. Works great and has a higher heat tolerance than the III. Adam

RE: furnice

Thanks for the help, it's the wall type. Have to see what i can do with it. After reading previous post, I would check it for any damage, if none i would use it. Great setup especially if you're boondocking a lot. No battery needed for it to run. Adam

RE: furnice

Is it a forced air unit or a wall heater. Most old trailers have a wall heater with no fan. Boy I wish I had that type of heater in mine. Adam

RE: ordinance against rv's

Sounds like if your behind your setback (usually a few feet behind sidewalk) and the RV has a cover over it, you're good to go. Adam

RE: P-30 disc brake help

rebuilt calipers @ pepboys were $21.00 each. I just helped a friend replace all of his on my old 1988 p-30. It seems that many a truck use the same caliper which keeps the cost down. Flushed the 20 year old brake fluid, it still looked good! For under a 100.00 bucks I would just replace them all. I agree, especially if they are that cheap. Usually if it is 1 or 2 wheels it is a caliper problem. If it is more, possibly a master cylinder. Does it drag with the engine running only? That might be a booster going bad. BTW Flush the brake fluid every TWO years. Especially on something that sits a lot. Adam

RE: Gray water black water

I have a bowl that fits nicely in one side of my kitchen sink. When I fill it doing dishes, I pour it into the toilet. Simple, Free and clean. Adam

RE: Removing Stomach Acid Smell From Bunk Foam

Actually, put it outside, OUT of the sun. UV will kill polyurethane foam. As said earlier in this thread, CHEAP foam is relatively cheap but it will not last long. Good foam is expensive and will last longer and be more comfortible. Look for a density of 2.2 lbs per cubic foot + for the good stuff. BTW it is made from fossil fuels so is is getting expensive. RE: Frame failure

Happened to my lippert between the sprongs. Welded angle iron from almost front to back on both sides to strengthen. Still going to gusset the shackles for extra support. Added probably 100lbs to frame. Adam

RE: 2006 Ford Tranny fluid 'Refresh'??

IMHO DO NOT FLUSH!! Flushing forces the fluid backwards and could dislodge particles from your filter and free them to block or "gum" up the works. I take it this is a new tranny and has never been serviced before? Drop the pan change the filter clean any residual "grime" from the bottom of the pan replace and refill. My guess was 7 quarts of fluid, but someone who has done this before suggests 8. Use the recommended fluid type and after putting 6 quarts in, start the engine, (do not drive it), but run through all the gears manually and check the level. If not full add 1 quart and repeat. By this time tranny and fluid should be up to temp, check with dipstick and add 1/2 quart if not full repeat above procedure. The point is you do not want to overfill as that would create more problems than it solves. No, it does not. BTW how is changing 7qts of tranny oil going to help when the trans, lines, filter and cooler hold 12-14? Flush is the only way. Just tell them you don't want ANY chemicals, just the fluid. Adam

RE: Air Bags-Cruiser Lift for Motorcycle

I put air bags in the front and rear of my FIL's Southwind and it had GREAT effect on handling and sway. Put the axle mounted ones in the rear and the ones that go inside the coils in the front. What a difference. Adam

RE: Popular w/ Neighbors w/ TH in driveway!

I had my TT parked in my community for about 2 hours loading up for a big trip and a guy who didn't even live there stopped to complain because he was concerned about the school traffic not being able to get by. He got real snippy when I told him I wouldn't be here long, just getting ready to leave but he kept giving me a hard time. I asked him if he had a gun and he said no. I then asked him if he thought an RV owner taking his family out of state would have a gun in his RV. The guy left. I LOVE IT :B My neighbor complained about my 20 ft. TT. So I moved it to my FIL's house and parked his 30 ft. class A in its spot for a week. When I switched back, no more complaints. Adam

RE: Water Heater

Adam, The igniter also contains the flame sensor and there is a good chance that the problem is the failure to sense the heat for the burning propane and not the circuit board. I would first replace the igniter as they cost about $35 while a new circuit board will cost at least $100($190 from Atwood). If you must replace the circuit board, let me suggest that you get one from Dinosaur Electronics rather than from Atwood or Suburban as the Dino boards have a much better warranty and they work better while costing about 1/2 of what one from the manufacturer will cost. If you have the time to get the parts from the internet, you will find very good service and prices from Mark's RV. Thankyou very much Kirk. I am going to go over there and clean the rusty thing first (sat for 2 years) then follow your recommendations. Adam

RE: Water Heater

Yup - 1. clean the board & plug contacts with a Q-tip + alcohol (or contact cleaner) if it still fails, it's surely the control module. The fact that it just continues to spark would say emphatically that the module is bad. Check the RG electronics site for a new dinosaur board. If it'll make you feel better, talk to the tech guys there before writing the check. Post what you found! Thanks, I will post results. Adam

RE: older coach battery not charging from engine

Why not replace the relay with an isolator? +1 Makes it so much easier. I replaced my F.I.L's 85 Southwind "relay" with an isolaor. Adam
